Wong Ming-dao on Love

One of the greatest heresies of modern times is the redefinition of "love" in unbiblical terms. By positioning love against the historic doctrines of the Christian faith, the world has turned "the love of God" into something false and hideous. What we need, then, is a return to the true love of God in Scripture.

It is Wong Ming-dao (1900-1991), the Father of the Underground Church in China and one of the most outstanding Christian pastors of the twentieth century, who helps us to do this very thing:

"We should never accept the carnal love offered by others; nor should we love others with this fleshly, human kind of love. Not only does this kind of love profit nothing to anyone, but on the contrary, it injures others as well as ourselves. There is a saying, 'A gentleman loves people with virtue; a despicable man loves people conditionally.' Believers should love people with the kind of love expressed in the Word of God. Only this kind of love is genuine love." (Wong Ming-dao, A Call to the Church: 20 Pre-prison Messages of Conviction and Courage [Fort Washington, PA: Christian Literature Crusade, 1983], 161, emphasis added)

True love trembles, joyfully, at God's Word. It abhors sin, warns of the future torments of Hell, washes feet, and lays down its life for its friends. True love elevates the God of Scripture above all else.

May God teach us how to love. May He strengthen our hearts, so that we may receive more and more of the love of Christ within us.

Soli Deo Gloria. Glory to God, alone.
