On the President-elect's Victory Speech

This is a day of lamentation and woe. This day, we who worship Jesus Christ, the living God and Savior, lament and wail over our land. We lament that half of our nation endorsed this New Jezebel, who sheds not only the blood of righteous Naboth, but also the blood of millions of tiny children in their own mother’s wombs (Isaiah 1:15). We lament that many of our fellow citizens endorse the curse of women rulers over the land (Isaiah 3:12), and that the grotesque orientations of the people of ancient Gomorrah are now deceitfully and craftily portrayed by their descendants as the marks of a victimized, freedom-fighting people (Romans 1:26-27, 32).

At the same time, we lament that the other half of our nation, including some public endorsements from professing Christians, cheered over this boastful trump card in the poker-playing hand of the Devil—this living, breathing, talkative card, whose eyes are full of shameful lusts, whose corrupt business practices trample upon the heads of the poor, and whose mouth is all Pharisee and no publican (Luke 18:9-14). We lament that he, who knows not God, failed to glorify God’s only-begotten Son in his victory speech (Acts 12:21-23), and, ever so tellingly, also brazenly omitted even a single reference to the Abortion Holocaust and the need for the full, total abolition of abortion, despite time being of the very essence, even as the bloodshed of the weakest of the weak continues this same week in our land, to the guilt and shame of our nation (Proverbs 31:8-9).

We weep because His holy name is dishonored ever so scornfully by the tyrannically imposed secularism of our public government, schools, and institutions. We tear our clothes, since a nation that fears not God is a nation that is under the divine judgment. We grieve over the guilty silence of, and doctrinal idolatries present within the very church of God. Streams of water run down from our eyes, because our leaders do not keep Your Law, O God!

May the LORD, in wrath, remember mercy.

“To the Law and to the Testimony! If they do not speak according to this Word, it is because there is no light in them.” (Isaiah 8:20)

Soli Deo Gloria. Glory to God, alone.

China's New "Two-child Policy"

Wang Zai, one of the indigenous leaders of the Chinese Christian revival that broke out in Mainland China just prior to the Communist takeover of China, was my great-grandfather. The father of no fewer than six children, Wang Zai was forced to flee China with a price upon his head--all for his Christian faith and evangelistic work in China. His younger brother, Dr. Luke Wang, was martyred for his Christian faith during the Cultural Revolution. Wang Zai's friend and co-laborer in ministry, Wang Mingdao, spent over two decades in prison, oftentimes being tortured, because of his refusal to allow the Gospel to be censored by the Communists. Therefore, the sufferings of Mainland Chinese Christians are very personal to me.

This week China announced a relaxation of its notorious "One-child Policy" in the form of a "Two-child Policy." I offer here a few brief statements of love-motivated, biblical warning to anyone in the Church who would be tempted to rejoice over this announcement:

1. The One-child Policy in China has been one of the most monstrous, diabolical policies ever enacted by any human government during the whole of human history. It has born the Satanic fruit of forced abortions, gender-selective abortions, rampant abandonment of female babies, a national outbreak of pornography, prostitution, and sexual immorality, and, at root, a Communist-national vision of the "family" that is so anti-biblical in nature as to merit the title of being an "anti-Christ" (small "a," at least) ideology. The One-child Policy is not only "child sacrifice"--which God abhors (Deuteronomy 12:31). It is also one of the worst forms of child sacrifice, since it wars against the divine blessing of child bearing, itself. It calls bountiful procreation "evil" and birth control "good"; in brazen and blasphemous human pride, it calls the sweet "bitter," and the bitter "sweet" (Isaiah 5:20-21).

2. Christians in the Western world who decry the evils of the One-child Policy in China oftentimes do so very hypocritically. For, the truth is not only that God abhors the One-child Policy. The truth is that God abhors all forms of birth control. This is so because the anti-child heart behind birth control (including "Natural Family Planning") runs contrary to His holy Word (Genesis 1:28; 1 Chronicles 25:5; Malachi 2:15; 1 Timothy 5:14; Titus 2:4; etc.). A true, God-fearing posture towards procreation in marriage desires the maximum fruitfulness of the womb, even as it lauds, with holy humility, the suffering faith of those married men and women of God who are given the heavy crosses of barrenness and bereavement (see, for example, Jeremiah 31:15 and Luke 1:6-7, amongst such a host of other Scriptures). Therefore, any policy that seeks to force married couples to employ birth control in their marriage is anathema to God.

3. Thus Reggie Littlejohn of Women's Rights without Frontiers is correct when she says, boldly, "The One-child Policy does not need to be adjusted. It needs to be abolished." However, biblically speaking, Mrs. Littlejohn has not been bold enough. For, the truth is not merely that God demands the abolition of forced abortions in China, and not only that He decrees the abolition of all other forms of abortion in China (for, He abhors all forms of abortion in China), but also that God commands, unequivocally, that birth control, itself, be abolished, both in China, and in all nations.

4. To say otherwise--to live in the hypocrisy of decrying the One-child Policy, on the one hand, and of condoning birth control, on the other--is to be a true disciple of Margaret Sanger (who founded Planned Parenthood, under its former name of the "American Birth Control League," in 1921). For Sanger herself was too sophisticated to trumpet murder (even if, secretly, she was very bloodthirsty for abortion). Rather, her largest (and quite Satanic) legacy was to deceive Protestant Christians into advocating birth control. This was quite a triumph for Sanger, and especially since the historical facts say that all of historic Christianity (Luther, Calvin, Baxter, Wesley, and Pink included!) up until the time of Sanger had condemned the use of birth control as an unthinkable sin.

5. A "Two-child Policy" thus is not to be interpreted as a harbinger of hope. It remains darkly diabolical. Yes, it will save some lives, and for each life saved, we ought to be grateful to God. Yet the policy, itself, remains Satanic and murderous. Forced abortions will continue in China. Gender-selective abortions will continue. Abortions, in general, will continue (and every abortion, whether forced or not, and whether gender-selective or not, is shocking to the conscience that knows and fears the Lord). And birth control, both in its abortifacient forms and in its non-abortifacient forms, shall continue to destroy the sanctity of the family in China. In sum, this week's announcement of the new Two-child Policy is similar to Pharaoh king of Egypt saying to his people, "So that you may know the benevolence of your ruler, and my compassionate care for all of my subjects, I hereby decree that not every Hebrew baby boy must be thrown in the Nile River. From now on, one out of every ten Hebrew baby boys shall be spared. It is, of course, very necessary to continue the reduction of the Hebrew population, for the sake of economic expediency and national interests, but at least now it may be said, once and for all, that the Hebrews have no more room to question our sacrificial benevolence towards them, our subjects."

6. The sad, horrible reality is that the Chinese Church "has blood on her hands" (as a missionary to China once put it to me). Sectors of the Church in China (including the House Church) have actually paid money in order to procure abortions for their church members. They have not followed the Bible in its vision for life in the womb. Rather, they have been enslaved to the brainwashing tactics of Chinese Communism, and have promoted, rather than decried abortion. Of course, certainly not all Chinese Church leaders are guilty of this, but a large number of them are so guilty. Precious few have been prophetically outspoken against the abominable nature of abortion. Even fewer have had the courage to declare that the historic Christian position on birth control is that it is unthinkable sinful. However, God loves His Church in China, and His Spirit is drawing her to repentance. Even now, many Chinese believers are awakening to these sins, repenting of them, and courageously going out to proclaim the truths of God's heart for preborn children.

7. Yet there is a great price to be paid by persecuted and suffering believers in China, as these truths begin to be embraced by them. If the "dragon" of Communism in China hates anything that questions its ultimate authority, then certainly it will despise any Christian leader who calls for the total abolition of abortion in China (for, the dragon feeds on such bloodshed). It will also rage against any pastor in China who begins to call birth control an "unthinkable sin." It will gnash its teeth against any House Church network that "goes underground" with the godly practice of bountiful Christian procreation and God-fearing home education. The price to pay for these truths is enormous. It is Cross-sized. Yet this is how God works! He uses Christian midwives and Christian mothers to conquer kings (Exodus 1:17; 2:9), and Christian babes to conquer kingdoms (Revelation 12:4-5). He also employs the testimony of the martyrs in order to slay the bloodthirsty dragon. They win by dying; they conquer by laying down their lives for the sake of others, and especially for the little ones in the womb:

"And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death." (Revelation 12:11)

42 Years Since Roe v. Wade

This January 22, it is time to remember that abortion IS illegal: DEUTERONOMY 5:17. What, then, shall God say of our voice, or lack thereof, on behalf of the voiceless, when we stand before His omniscient Judgment Seat? It has now been 42 years since Roe v. Wade (Jan. 22, 1973). All true Christians must P.R.A.A. (Pray Reverently for the Abolition of Abortion).

Soli Deo Gloria. Glory to God, alone.

The Power to Suffer for the Gospel

"Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the Gospel according to the power of God."
(2 Timothy 1:8)

We want to be Christians who know the power of God. Such power brings salvation to all who believe (Romans 1:16). It also enlivens the faith of Christians. The power of God quickens our hearts, puts spring into our steps, and drives us onwards, and upwards on the Narrow Road of faith--the Narrow Road that leads us to the heavenly City.

However, many of us who are Christians in the Western part of the world do not experience much of the power of God because we are not willing to follow the Apostle Paul where he leads us: "...share with me in the sufferings for the Gospel" (2 Timothy 1:8). Desiring to guard our own sense of self-security, we purposefully ignore the connection between a willingness to "share in the sufferings for the Gospel" and "the power of God" that enables us to endure such sufferings. Yet "the power of God" is given, says the blessed Apostle, for the sake of perseverance through persecutions. When we share in the fellowship of Christ's sufferings, allowing His scorn to become our scorn and His mistreatment to become our own, we are given the endurance of such tribulations "according to the power of God."

Are we, then, too ashamed of Christ's suffering witness--He was a despised and rejected King--and of Paul's scornful mistreatment--he was the Apostle in criminal chains--to desire, truly, the power of God in our lives? Are we seeking the joy of the Holy Spirit while simultaneously refusing to join Him in grieving over the wickedness of our surrounding culture? Are we looking for a powerful religion without the costly demand of a cross? Are we coveting the brilliant light of resurrection power without first being willing to lower our sinful flesh into the deep darkness of the grave?

False teachers have a form of godliness, but deny its power (2 Timothy 3:5). If they were true Christian teachers, they would understand the need to suffer for the sake of righteousness, and they would do so "according to the power of God" (2 Timothy 1:8). Yet they do not, for they will not. Thus prosperity preachers and flattering prophets are not at all powerful, in the biblical sense. They may put on a show of power, but their unwillingness to pay the price for the sake of righteousness betrays their hidden bankruptcy of true, godly power.

The true power of God is given to those who are willing to share with the Apostle "in the sufferings for the Gospel" (v. 8). William Tyndale (1494-1536) was thus a powerful man of faith precisely because he understood whence spiritual power comes. Says Tyndale, "God is He that does all things for us and fights for us, and we do but suffer only."

How powerful is your Christian witness? Are you willing to join with the Apostle Paul in suffering for the sake of the Gospel? When the Gospel indicts the prevailing culture around us and calls people to forsake that culture and to turn their hearts to God, let us not shirk the opportunity to proclaim the Gospel, in love, even though our witness will result in persecutions. And when the power of God descends upon us like a rushing spiritual wind, enabling us to persevere through the persecutions, let us never boast in ourselves, but only in the Cross of our Lord:

"For the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." (1 Corinthians 1:18)

Wong Ming-dao on Love

One of the greatest heresies of modern times is the redefinition of "love" in unbiblical terms. By positioning love against the historic doctrines of the Christian faith, the world has turned "the love of God" into something false and hideous. What we need, then, is a return to the true love of God in Scripture.

It is Wong Ming-dao (1900-1991), the Father of the Underground Church in China and one of the most outstanding Christian pastors of the twentieth century, who helps us to do this very thing:

"We should never accept the carnal love offered by others; nor should we love others with this fleshly, human kind of love. Not only does this kind of love profit nothing to anyone, but on the contrary, it injures others as well as ourselves. There is a saying, 'A gentleman loves people with virtue; a despicable man loves people conditionally.' Believers should love people with the kind of love expressed in the Word of God. Only this kind of love is genuine love." (Wong Ming-dao, A Call to the Church: 20 Pre-prison Messages of Conviction and Courage [Fort Washington, PA: Christian Literature Crusade, 1983], 161, emphasis added)

True love trembles, joyfully, at God's Word. It abhors sin, warns of the future torments of Hell, washes feet, and lays down its life for its friends. True love elevates the God of Scripture above all else.

May God teach us how to love. May He strengthen our hearts, so that we may receive more and more of the love of Christ within us.

Soli Deo Gloria. Glory to God, alone.

There Are Degrees of Sin

American Christianity is in crisis. It is, in its general body (but praise be to God that there are still some pastors scattered throughout the nation who are courageously preaching the Bible, without compromise), on the edge of ceasing to be Christian, in the biblical and historic senses. As the church in Europe has gone (just as the ancient church in areas where it formerly flourished also went), so the American church will go, unless God mercifully intervenes.

There are numerous reasons for the demise of the Christian-ness of the Christian church in America. Many of them are moral. Professing American Christians (and I say "professing" because a shocking number of them are not at all born of the Spirit of Christ) have, for far too long, lustfully desired the gods and goddesses of their pagan neighbors. In their ambitions, they have developed a gluttonous appetite for money. In their child rearing, they have embraced what are, essentially, Darwinian theories about parenting and education. In their personal lives, they have craved the images, diversions, and carnal practices of their unbelieving peers.

However, morality and doctrine are inseparable. As Gregory of Nazianzus (AD 329-389) teaches us, a man's holiness, or lack thereof, always affects his doctrinal soundness, and vice versa. Those who deny doctrinal truths about God will inevitably fall into wickedness. And those who lust after wicked practices will inevitably deny doctrinal truths about God, in order to justify their unholy practices. (For example, a feminist who desires the wickedness of unsubmissive wives in the home, or of women pastors in the church will, in the end, have to violate the doctrine of the Trinity [that is, the truth that there is functional hierarchy, complete with headship and submission, which exists, timelessly, within the very nature of God] in order to justify his or her feminism).

On the doctrinal end of the compromise, the crux of the matter is the holiness of God, and our need to fear Him. Since much of American Christianity has become flippant and casual in her attitude towards God, it is on a path towards destruction. Theologically, the lack of trembling before the holiness of God in most American churches is, once compared with the historic Church, a sign of idolatry in the church. Practically, the lack of biblical instruction on the fear of God and how it applies to every aspect of Christian living is, in light of historic Christianity, the very gateway to licentiousness.

American Christianity's Unorthodox Denial of "Degrees of Sin"

But these are all theoretical concepts. What does this actually mean for the church? It seems that there is a concrete, telling sign of the times for American Christianity. It is how pastors within American Christianity describe sin. They are teaching on sin, to be sure, for if they did not, their heresies would be far too evident to all. However, the fact that they teach on sin does not mean that they give orthodox interpretations of the nature of sin.

In specific, there is a dangerous teaching lurking within popular American Christianity that betrays the deeper, foundational problems within the American church. It is the teaching that "all sins are equal."

By "all sins are equal," these popular pundits in the pulpit do not mean, simply, that all sins, both great and small, merit everlasting condemnation in Hell (which is the point of James 2:9-11). Rather, they misinterpret (and twist) the Sermon on the Mount (e.g. Matthew 5:21-22, 27-28) in order to claim that no one sin is worse than another. They deny "degrees of sin", outright. It then follows, for them, that there are neither degrees of wickedness amongst the reprobate, nor degrees of righteousness (sanctification) amongst the saved.

Historically speaking, this is unorthodox thought. Not only up until the Protestant Reformation, but actually through and after the Reformation, all biblical Christians (including the Protestants, as exemplified in the Puritans) held to degrees of sin, and degrees of righteousness. Luther and Calvin, for instance, denied the Roman Catholic distinction between mortal and venial sins, but the thought of denying degrees of sin, in general, would have been anathema to them.

The Bible and "Degrees of Sin"

Biblically speaking, there is no room in Scripture to deny the doctrine of varying degrees of sin. Overeating at the dinner table is a sin, but it is not of the same degree of sinfulness as a husband striking his wife. The latter is much more sinful than the former. Lust is Satanic, making one worthy of Hell (which is why Christians plead the blood of Christ and His righteousness, alone, for their salvation), but adultery is a million times worse. Not taking care of the poor (the orphan and the widow) is extremely sinful and evokes God's anger. But abortion is much, much worse; it is, in all cases, the actual murder of the weakest of the weak.

The Bible is clear that there are, indeed, degrees of sin. Thus it is written in the sacred Scriptures:

"But if a man acts with premeditation against his neighbor, to kill him by treachery, you shall take him from My altar, that he may die. And he who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He who kidnaps a man and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, shall surely be put to death. And he who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. If men contend with each other, and one strikes the other with a stone or with his fist, and he does not die but is confined to his bed, if he rises again and walks about outside with his staff, then he who struck him shall be acquitted. He shall only pay for the loss of his time, and shall provide for him to be thoroughly healed" (Exodus 21:14-19, where degrees of punishment reflect degrees of sin).

"The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born" (Matthew 26:24, where Judas' sin is much greater than the sins of others).

"But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea" (Mark 9:42, where sins that cause little children to stumble are of the highest degree).

"And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more" (Luke 12:47-48, where degrees of punishment in Hell reflect degrees of sin on earth).

"Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?" (1 Corinthians 6:18-19, where sexual sins are of a higher degree of sin because they sin against one's very body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit).

"My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment" (James 3:1, wherein the sins of pastors are greater than the sins of others).

"Jesus answered, 'You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin' " (John 19:11, where Jesus, our Lord, states, unambiguously, that the Jews [and especially the high priest] who delivered Him to Pilate committed a sin of higher degree than Pilate's own sin).

The Great Implications for Our Future

Lacking both the proper trembling before God's holiness and the practical applications of the fear of God in worship and daily thinking, America's casual Christianity has lost the orthodox understanding of the horrific nature of sin. By twisting the New Testament's definition of "grace" in order to twist its definition of "sin," this new Christianity ("new" meaning "unorthodox") has stepped outside of the bounds of historic Christianity.

The implications are great. First, this denial of the horrific nature of sin (and the degrees therein) explains why many American Christians voted for the most pro-abortion president in United States history. If there are no degrees of sin, then this is a plausible action. If there are degrees of sin, then this is unthinkable.

Also, the trend within American Christianity to downplay the abominable nature of homosexuality, all in the name of New Testament love, is driven by this unorthodox understanding of "all sins are equal." The biblical truth is that heterosexual fornication is Satanically wicked, to be sure (so why, then, do American Christians think that they can watch movies that depict it?), but homosexuality is even more wicked. Instead of arguing that same sex marriage may be legitimately legalized without doing great harm to our society (an argument that is, in light of Scripture, shockingly pagan), Christian pastors ought to summon their people both to be compassionate towards those who have been deceived (willfully and perversely) into thinking of homosexuality as an identity, rather than a conscience choice, and to be appalled at the abominable nature of homosexuality, itself.

(If you attend a church in America, ask yourself this question: "Does my pastor feel obligated, by Scripture, to teach me, from the pulpit, the abominable nature of homosexuality and the wrath of God that it incurs?)

But the previous two examples merely illustrate the way in which a denial of the historic doctrine of "degrees of sin" will corrupt both the preaching of the church and the works of the church. Ultimately, these corruptions will paint for people in the American church a different "image" of God than the true God of Scripture. These corruptions will, inevitably, lead people into idolatry. The wrathful, holy, war-like God of not only the Old Testament books of Deuteronomy, Ezekiel, and Zephaniah, but also the New Testament books of Luke, Romans, and Revelation, just to name a few, will neither be welcomed nor worshiped in our churches.

What is needed, then, is a massive repentance in the American church. We must learn to tear our hearts, and not just our clothes, before the holy, holy, holy God of the Bible. We must confess before Him that we have belittled "grace" by belittling "sin." We must turn from our man-made definitions of "love" and "winsomeness," and return to the true love of God in Scripture, which is a love that abhors sins, in all of its varying degrees. It is only then that we will return to the true glory of the Cross, and the true love of Christ Jesus who bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness.

May God have mercy upon us. May He revive historic Christianity in America, for the glory of His name amongst all nations.

Soli Deo Gloria. Glory to God, alone.

The Bible and Same Sex Marriage

As the U.S. Supreme Court deliberates on its definition of marriage this week, remember that Christians must stand, unashamedly, upon the Word of God. Genesis defines marriage as procreative in nature (1:28, which excludes homosexual unions) and as being exclusively between one man and one woman (2:24). The book of Genesis also describes the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah as "very grave" (18:20). The book of Leviticus says that homosexuality is an "abomination" (18:22). The Apostle Paul declares publicly, to believers and to unbelievers alike, that homosexuality results from "vile passions" and is "against nature" and "shameful" (Romans 1:26-27; note that this heavy truth from Paul is also a very loving truth). The Apostle Paul goes on to say that "neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites...will inherit the kingdom of God" (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, which is a warning about the judgment to come that is issued in love). God's Word must be upheld above the word of man.

The Bible's view of "gay marriage" is thus antithetical to the popular view of contemporary Western culture. Our culture champions it as a civil right. The Bible condemns it as a very dangerous and evil practice. As Christians, we are, to be sure, to "save with fear, pulling [some] out of the fire," but we are to do this while at the same time guarding our own holiness (both in life and in doctrine) before God, as "hating even the garment defiled by the flesh" (Jude 23). So please pray for people in America to be liberated, by repentance and faith in the Gospel, from the deep deceptions of the homosexual movement, and pray also that Christ's people will be unashamed of what the Bible has to say about it.

Soli Deo Gloria. Glory to God, alone.
